As a Nursing Leader, understanding the importance of policy and politics and its impact on your organization, leadership and ultimately clinical practice is essential. This session will help you to gain the confidence and skills to be politically engaged in a meaningful way to advance healthcare in your community and region.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to
- Define civic engagement, political determinants of health and “representation” in the political context.
- Describe the qualities, skills and expertise that nurses bring to policymaking and politics, particularly in the current environment.
- Describe what participants can do to increase their civic engagement now.
- Describe what we know about the numbers of nurses and midwives who hold elected office.
- Provide resources and guidance for nurses who might be interested in running for elected office or helping those who do.
