Message of Hope and Resilience in Healthcare for 2026

Dear Colleagues, Members, and Friends of NWONL,

As we stand at the threshold of 2026, I am deeply honored to address you as the president of the Northwest Organization of Nurse Leaders (NWONL). In reflecting upon the incredible journey our profession has taken, I am filled with an enduring sense of hope for the future of healthcare—hope that is grounded in the extraordinary resilience, compassion, and innovation that each of you demonstrates every day. At this pivotal moment, I want to acknowledge the challenges ahead, confident in our collective strength to overcome them together.

Hope is more than a feeling—it is a force that propels us forward, especially in times of uncertainty. In the rapidly evolving landscape of healthcare, hope is found in every patient’s recovery, every family’s gratitude, and every act of kindness within our teams. It is the foundation upon which we build trust with our communities and foster healing within our institutions. As nurses and leaders, we are uniquely positioned to inspire hope, not only in our patients but also in one another.

Looking forward to 2026, I am optimistic about the advancements on the horizon. Technological breakthroughs, from telehealth expansion to data-driven care, are opening new pathways to reach underserved populations and improve health outcomes. Our ability to collaborate across disciplines has never been stronger, and together, we are rewriting the narrative of what is possible in patient-centered care. The voices of nurses are being heard in policy-making, research, and innovation, ensuring that care is equitable, safe, and evidence-based.

Yet, we must also acknowledge the significant challenges that remain. The lingering effects of the global pandemic have left lasting impacts on our workforce and the communities we serve. Burnout, staffing shortages, and moral distress continue to test our resolve. The increasing complexity of patient needs, combined with the rising costs of care and disparities in access, demand our urgent attention and creative solutions.

We face the challenge of adapting to new technologies while maintaining the human touch that defines nursing. We must address health equity with renewed urgency, striving to eliminate disparities that persist across socioeconomic, racial, and geographic lines. And as leaders, we must prioritize the well-being of our teams, investing in mental health support, professional development, and sustainable work environments.

Despite these challenges, I am confident in our ability to meet them head-on. Our shared commitment to learning, advocacy, and collaboration will be the key to our continued success. It is in unity that we find our greatest strength. By lifting each other up, embracing innovation, and staying true to our core values of compassion and excellence, we will shape a healthcare future where hope not only survives but thrives.

In 2026, let us reaffirm our dedication to our patients, our profession, and to one another. Let us be the leaders who light the way forward, even in the face of adversity. Your courage and passion inspire hope every day, and together, there is no challenge we cannot overcome.

On behalf of the NWONL board, we want to hear from our members on your thoughts and suggestions for how the organization can continue to provide meaningful impact for you. We value your input and believe you help shape our collective path forward, please feel free to reach to connect with me or one of the board members (2026 NWONL Board Members) anytime.

With gratitude and unwavering hope,

Pat Patton, DNP, MSN, RN, NEA-BC
